Zerafa Studio, and Cumulus Architects Inc participated in the initial RFI process for the OLG’s proposed 5000+ seat multi-purpose Entertainment Centre in Niagara Falls Ontario. Our RFI response identified and analyzed five potential development sites in relation to the two existing Casino properties, and evaluated the merits of each in relationship to the OLG’s requirements.
Subsequent to our detailed response to the RFI, Zerafa Studio worked directly with our client's Niagara Falls Live consultant team to help develop their official design proposal for the project.
Utilizing the proposed plan, we were tasked with developing an alternative envelope design for the project. The proposed design takes a simple approach to create a cost effective yet dynamic wrapper for the building structure, while maintaining the proposed building geometry. For this scheme, the building is literally wrapped in a series of horizontal facade ribbons, each corresponding to a particular level and each following an undulating and unique path.
The effect is to create a series of stacked undulating volumes, breaking down the massive structure into a collection of smaller scale horizontal components, and creating the impression of constant movement. In contrast to the horizontal stratification of the massing, a vertical ribbed metal panel system is applied to emphasize the movement of each layer in relation to the others. This approach allows for the seamless integration of the primary auditorium volume with the elliptical corner entry and entertainment volume. Glazing from the entry volume bleeds into the facade ribbons only where public concourses and perimeter program spaces extend out from the main auditorium.
